Corporal Punishment

There is now a wide debate about Corporal Punishment and whether it is okay to spank or physically punish children in schools and in homes. They say it is not damaging if it is being used in an appropriate way. I believe that depending on the circumstance, it should be okay for a parent to discipline their child. Although, if they are doing it constantly and to the point where it is leaving marks on the child, it shouldn’t be okay. Children need to know right from wrong and a punishment could potentially let them know what they are doing/did is not okay and not to let it happen again. In the article it states that, “Those who support the right of a parent to spank may not wish corporal punishment to be legal in schools,”(Wagner). Also, those who use corporal punishment in schools are protected from prosecution.

Reading further, I believe that spanking children as a punishment is not okay. I think that when children see someone being punished by being hit or spanked they may think that is okay and they might do it to others. For example, when a child sees someone being beaten because the other is angry, they may think that whenever they are angry it’s okay for them to beat on someone else to make themselves feel better. According to the article, children who are frequently spanked have a higher increase in anxiety/depression. But anxiety and depression are one of the main leads to suicide in children and teens.

However, supporters feel that discipline in the classroom reduces youth violence and teaches respect for authority (Wagner). With that being said, if you were to discipline a student in the classroom for other students to see that would only cause more tension between the students and the teachers. For example, the officer who forcely removed the student from her desk for misbehaving in class also put other students in denial by feeling unsafe, or scared. A student in the class, Tony Robinson, says, “I have never seen anything so nasty-looking, so sick, to the point where other students are turning away.” He continues, “That is suppose to be somebody who protects us, not somebody that we need to be scared of, or afraid”(Chappell). With that being said, if we were to use punishment in schools in front of other students we know exactly how they are going to feel witnessing those things.

Supporters also believe that paddling should be used when all other forms of discipline have failed. Using paddling in schools can cause multiple issues one being, if a mark is left on a student after being disciplined parents are going to start to complain about their children being “beaten” by their teachers. Is corporal punishment worth all the drama?

I think we should create a law to remove corporal punishment in the classroom to eliminate the possibilities of other students feeling unsafe or uncomfortable. Some questions that are being asked are, “How does it work?, Who decides? Are parents notified?”. With that being said, schools are beginning to send home permission forms asking for permission to paddle their child when they are misbehaving. Also, schools have been using the excuse that when their child enters the school building they now have the permission to do as they please. I believe that we should create a law that removes corporal punishment from schools and if schools go against this law they should be terminated and or spending time in jail. I don’t think teachers should have the right to put their hands on a child if they are not legally their parent/guardian. Overall, I think parents should be more aware of the way schools treat their children and what is really going on when they aren’t there.
