The Price of Eating Healthy

Lately, it seems that healthy foods are so much more expensive than processed foods. Michelle Obama has been pushing against obesity since the Obamas have been in office. She has especially pushed against child obesity with her program, Let’s Move.

When going grocery shopping, it’s clear to see the difference in prices between fresh fish and a box of fish sticks or the difference between whole grain products and products made with white grains. According to CSN News, 46 million people in America are on food stamps. Many of these people are on budgets and this is the main group of people who suffer from obesity.

Michelle Obama has created a program to help fight childhood obesity called Let’s Move. According to Let’s Move, one in every three of children in America are obese or overweight. Through this program’s activities are set up in different cities. There are five main goals to the Let’s Move program: start early and smart, use MyPlate, smart servings for students, model food service, and active kids.

A survey was sent out to the students here at Licking Valley to see how they felt about the lunches here at school and if healthy guidelines are enforced at home also. Most of the responses from the survey agreed that they didn’t like the lunch guidelines.

One strong response from the survey is: “I feel rather indifferent regarding the whole situation. While I am dependent upon the Licking Valley lunch program for most, if not all, of my dietary guidelines. After coming home from the typical day, I generally eat some microwavable freezer food in order to sustain my hunger for the time being. With all considerations placed aside, I feel as if the strict lunch guidelines and the added-in preservatives balance out the otherwise horrible diet that I would be consuming on a day to day basis; however, I do wish that the food offered was more personable to the tongue [sic]”.

This graph shows how healthy eating is mostly not enforced at home.

So really it’s more like “Let’s Microwave” not Let’s Move.
