Steven Avery Speaks for First Time Since Making a Murderer
Manitowoc County, Wisconsin convict Steven Avery spoke out about the Netflix docu-series Making a Murderer by sending a three-page letter to an investigative reporter in Milwaukee that was received Thursday.
Avery (born July 9, 1962) is an American man who served 18 years in prison for a wrongfully convicted of sexual assault in 1985. Only days after his first deposition in the $36 million suit against the county and former officials, he was arrested for the murder of Teresa Halbach. All of the evidence initially pointed toward Steven Avery as the killer, but, as the story unfolds, questions are coming to the surface.
In 2007, he was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the murder of Teresa Halbach. Now, nearly ten years later, he decides to speak out. In the letter, Avery wrote, “The real killer is still out there. Who is he stalking now? I am really innocent of this case and that is the truth!!! The truth will set me free!!!!!!”
A petition was formed to free Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey, who was also imprisoned for similar charges regarding Ms. Halbach’s murder. In order for this petition to be sent and reviewed by President Obama, it must meet the minimum requirement of one hundred thousand signatures. It has more than succeeded the qualifications.
The protesters wrote, ”WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO: Pardon Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey for their alleged involvement in the murder of Teresa Halbach.” Though the support was vast, it wasn’t able to change the outcome, because the president doesn’t have the authority to pardon a state crime.
Avery is currently incarcerated at Waupun Correctional Institution. This institute receives death threats and hatred phone calls day-to-day.
