Hillary Clinton's Viewpoints

Do you feel confident in a woman running this country? Potentially, Clinton could be the first. Hillary Clinton was born on October 26, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, going on to earn her law degree from Yale University. She married fellow law school graduate, Bill Clinton, in 1975. She later served as first lady from 1993 to 2001, and then as a U.S. senator from 2001 to 2009. In early 2007, Clinton announced her plans to run for the presidency. After winning the national election, Obama appointed Clinton secretary of state. She was sworn in as part of his cabinet in January 2009 and served until 2013. In the spring of 2015, she announced her plans to run for the U.S. presidency.

As a young woman, Hillary was active in young Republican groups (1964). She was later inspired to work in some form of public service after hearing a speech in Chicago by the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., becoming a Democrat in 1968. As recent as February 21st, Clinton leads the Democratic primary polls by 49%, to Sanders 42.1%. She feels strongly on the topics of gun violence, equality, and racial justice.

Gun Violence

Is it time for a gun violence prevention reform? “About 33,000 Americans are killed by guns each year”. Clinton recently spoke out about the topic, “I don’t know how we keep seeing shooting after shooting, read about the people murdered because they went to Bible study or they went to the movies or they were just doing their job, and not finally say we’ve got to do something about this”. Innocent people lose their lives each day due to accidents and encounters with guns. In order to fix this, Clinton first plans on, “Strengthening background checks and closing dangerous loopholes in the current system”. Another treatment for this madness is, “holding irresponsible dealers and manufactures accountable”. Of course, keeping guns out of the hands of “terrorists, domestic abusers, other violent criminals, and the severely mentally ill” will play a tremendous rule in the reform.

LGBT Americans

Do lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans deserve to live their lives free from discrimination? Clinton stated, “We should ban discrimination against LGBT Americans and their families so they can live, learn, marry, and work just like everybody else.” Any specifics? Americans tend to take their freedoms, rights, and endless opportunities for granted. Clinton intends to “ensure full federal equality for all LGBT Americans” and “support LGBT kids, parents, and elders”. She would also like to “secure affordable treatment for people living with HIV and AIDS.

Racism

America’s long struggle with race is far from finished. Clinton said, “We can’t hide from any of these hard truths about race and justice in America. We have to name them, and own them, and then change them”. Racial inequality is an ongoing crisis. Although it has gotten leaps and bounds better, it is nowhere near perfect. Clinton plans to “end the era of mass incarceration” and “protect immigrants’ rights and keep families together”. She will also “defend every American’s right to vote”.
