Cellphones in School
Cellphones in school are a good thing. They help students tell their parents what they are going to do after school and finding out what they need to do.
Schools have started to ease up on allowing cell phones in school because lots of shootings have been happening. When schools did not allow students to have their phones, parents were becoming very concerned.
Cellphones in school should be allowed because “70 percent of U.S. parents communicate with their children by text messages.” Children need to talk to their parents somehow because if they can’t talk to their parents, then how will they ever know what they are doing? So, letting them text in school is a good thing.
Phones need to be allowed in schools because what if something happens and the student has no way to talk to their parents. If the students aren't on them while the teacher is talking, it should be fine as long as they are paying attention. “Students frequently listen to music while studying to make the process less painful and, in some cases, because they believe music will help them learn.” Some students like to listen to music while working because it helps them focus better and they will get more work done.
Parents and teachers both say that cellphones are great because they have calendars and reminders they can put in their phones about their work or what is going on at school. “Students can take pictures of notes and reference them later or take pictures of a reading assignment and read it when they have free time.”
Proponents of banning cellphones at school often only focus on their side of the argument, ignoring reasons why cell phones should be allowed. They commit the sharpshooter fallacy because they stated their side of the story and not the other side. This is how they state it: some people have stated in different articles that schools should not allow cell phones because they distract the students from their learning. Teachers in schools have claimed that classrooms already have enough distractions in class with other students the teachers don't want the cellphones to be another distraction. They claim that the students will be less distracted and will get better grades. What if the student needs to tell their parent something and they can't because phones are not allowed?
If someone wants to be able to contact their child easier in school, then they should talk to the school about it. More schools need to allow phones in school and not have service blockers, so the students will be able to contact people and make arrangements. No one will ever know if something bad will happen if they can't talk to their parents. Schools need to hang up on the phone policy.
