Transition from Middle School to High School
The transition from middle school to high school can be a scary situation. Going from being top dog in middle school to a little minnow with lots of other really big fish in high school. There are kids 4 years older than you and some of your classes are mixed with these older kids, it’s very intimating.
High school is a chance for you to meet new people who are older than you as well as branch out from the kids you have gone to school with your whole life. Kimber Mitchell (9th grade) explained, “I actually like having classes with older kids because I have been with the same people since kindergarten, it’s good to see new people.” Having classes with older kids also allows you to get in on all the older kid drama, “It’s not intimidating but it is quite funny to listen to the drama,” assured Maddie Sherman (9th grade).
Classes in high school are a lot different compared to the classes in middle school. They are shorter, you have more of them, and the teachers aren't breathing down your neck for you to get your work done. “In the classes, there isn’t as much connection and friendship with teachers because you don’t see them as long,” Maddie enlightened. Another thing students noticed in high school, “there seem to be a lot more classes and they seem to be shorter than the classes in middle school.” In fact, the classes are only 10 minutes shorter in high school.
The transition is very important because you are going from something that is so routine for you to something that is completely new. “The transition was scary at first but over the last week, it has gotten a lot better and less scary,” Maddie reassuringly stated. Once you get into a routine of things it gets a lot easier. The first couple days are always the hardest because it is a new experience, but after those first couple days things are easier and you don't have to rely on your schedule so much to find your classes. “It’s been kind of nerve-racking in a way, but it has been good,” Kimber said.
“One downside would be changing classes, it’s a lot more stressful with that amount of people pushing and shoving. I didn’t expect the people to be so big,” explained Maddie. Kids in high school are most likely going to be bigger than you and there is way more people with 4 grades mixed. It’s hard not to stress about having to deal with all these people and finding your way to classes with 200 other students trying to get to their class on time. It’s always good to come prepared to school because it saves you from the stress of forgetting things and it is a good habit to make sure you come prepared.
Going from middle school to high school can be a scary thing if you let it. If you go into high school with a positive attitude you will be in control and you can make the best of it. High school can be a great experience and it is a great time to make life long friends. High school does not have to be that scary thing that you don’t want to go to.
