Should Licensed Drivers Have to Take a Test Every Few Years?

There is some controversy over if licensed drivers should have to retake their driving test every few years. For most states, it applies for the elderly, normally starting around 65 or 70 years of age. In Illinois, those over 75 have to retake their tests, making it the only state in the country to do so.

Licensed drivers should be required to take a test every few years. Licensed drivers can become more reckless as time goes on, because they are used to driving by the laws they first learned, but the laws are constantly changing and we should keep them updated every few years by testing them.

According to CDC.gov, in-person license renewals of older drivers have lowered fatality rates on the road by making them retake their vision and road tests as well as giving the older drivers a more frequent renewal cycle.

A school wide survey asking the school’s opinion on the topic revealed that 45.8% of LV students believe that licensed drivers should have to take a test every few years, 43.7% of people believe that license drivers should not be required, and 10.4% said other.

One anonymous student says, “In those few years something could have happened to the person like there eyesight was impaired or they are getting older and are forgetting things [sic]”.

Something could have happened to a driver to impair their vision or disable them in a way to where they should not be driving or they are getting older and could possibly be forgetting some basics of driving.

“I think they should have to take a test every few years because they could have changed or forgot some of the rules that they have to know,” another anonymous student states.

I agree. because the laws of the road change year by year due to accidents, construction or significant events. It is important to keep drivers updated on the laws of the road so they keep up good driving habits and stay safe.
