Sociology of Angel

In 1999, a TV show, Angel, first aired. It was based off the original T.V show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” In this show, the main character and his friends battle other vampires and demons that hurt other people. There are different viewpoints that can be noticed while watching this show. These viewpoints can also be pointed out in real life and are studied by sociologist

One is that all the victims are female and that all the “heroes” are men. This is an example of how feminist would analyze the show. Feminism is a type of the conflict theory. Conflict theorist view society as individuals that compete for resources and power.

Another theory that could be pointed out during the show is symbolic interactionist. Symbolic interactionists study a certain object and its meaning. The main character, Angel, finds a ring that makes it impossible for a vampire to die. The ring represents all of the events that the vampires had to miss out on and how it makes it harder to form relationships with other people.

Functionalist theories study how each individual contributes to society. The whole show is a representation of a dysfunction. A dysfunction is an action that disrupts the peace of society. When the villain takes a person and makes them a victim, it is disrupting how society should work. This causes Angel and his friend to go out and restore the peace making the society functional again.

Sociology perspectives are everywhere; they are the form of society and are a way for people to understand how society functions. The perspectives are used to pick out certain issues so that they can be fixed to make life a little easier.
