Does race matter in adoption?

Adoption is where an adult takes in a child who doesn't have a family or one who is living in an unsafe situation. Any family should be able to adopted a child of a different race because looks don't matter. We do not have to look alike to be family: color should not matter, and we should not get judged because our family may look different.

Adopting a child of a different race is an extra responsibility because parents have a responsibility to show them their culture and where they came from. Approximately 40% percent of adoptions in America are transracial, which means putting a child with adoptive parents of another race.

According to PBS, “58 percent of Americans know someone who has been adopted, has adopted a child or has relinquished a child for adoption.” It's common for different race to adopt a different race child these days it is more common than before.

Raising a child that isn't the same race as us shouldn't be any different. They should be raised as if they were born to their adoptive parents. They shouldn't be treated differently.

Adoption expert Adam Pertman, executive director of the Evan B.Donaldson Adoption institute, advises adoptive parents,“You just raise your child as though you gave birth to her,”

Someone who disagrees with transracial adoption may say you need to look like your family. For example, if you're black, your child should be black. A person who doesn't care about race wouldn't care if their family looks different and not the same. We don't have to look alike or have the same traits as our family to be family.

It should not matter that we don't look the same as our family or that we don't have the same DNA as them.

Be accepting and not judge people by their differences.
