House Republicans help keep Trump's taxes a secret

Republicans in the House of Representatives have just scored a victory in shooting down a plan to make President Donald Trump’s tax returns public.

A bill proposed by Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) proposed legislation that would force the president to release his tax returns. The house voted 229-185, with most of the representatives voting along their party lines. This vote tally eliminated the proposal.

The house had used a similar law in 2014 to investigate the IRS and their treatment of tea party groups. Pascrell raised the idea of raising the legislation, but Kevin Brady (R-Texas) shot him down. Brady told Politico that “if Congress begins to use its powers to rummage around in the tax returns of the president, then what prevents Congress from doing the same to the average Americans?” .

That statement did not go unchecked; many people have stated that there is a difference between Congress knowing the president's tax returns and the returns of the average Americans. But even on the level of the House, this did not go without a fight. House Minority leader, Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) took potshots at Republicans for stopping the effort. “If there’s nothing in there, then what are Republicans afraid of?”.

Donald Trump is the first president in modern history to refuse to release his tax returns. At first he claimed the IRS auditing him was the reason why , despite the IRS saying he can release his returns whenever. Multiple polls have disproved his new defense method, which is claiming that nobody cares what is within his returns.

As of right now, the fight to release President Trumps tax returns is not succeeding, it is projected that Democrats will need to win back the House of Representatives and at least three seats in the Senate to successfully force Mr. Trump to release his returns.
