How 4-H Impacts Youth

4-H is the largest out-of-school activity with over 7 million members in the United States. In 4-H members pick a project to complete and are offered the chance to take their project to fair. Projects include activities such as scrapbooking to showing a horse at fair. They also have projects that are science based or engineering.

4-H is a great learning experience for youth. It teaches them to be responsible; if a project that someone chooses requires an animal, that person is responsible for taking care of that animal. If they don’t take care of it, the animal will die. 4-H projects require organization, in fact, many projects come with a record book to record everything done with that certain project.

When asked about the 4-H project she was doing, Breanna Laughlin said, “I have market hogs, breeding gilts (pig), dairy feeder steer, market lamb, and breeding ewes (sheep). I also do different kinds of miscellaneous projects. I have over 70 awards.”

Winning may not be everything, but to many 4-H’ers it's one of the best parts of the project. Thus ,it’s very important for the person doing 4-H should have all the required things completed in the project. Breanna also stated that her favorite memories from 4-H were “working hard and getting the awards I deserve. I love the look on peoples face when I am in the ring.”

When youth are involved in 4-H, they get involved in their communities, whether it’s to raise money for their club or to do community service. Many clubs have a community service project they complete, such as making breakfast at a church or volunteering at the humane society. Many clubs also do fundraisers to raise money for their clubs like having a bake sale or a car wash.

4-H is a learning experience for youth of all ages. Kids learn responsibility, leadership, and ways to get involved in a community. Not only do kids get to complete their projects by taking care of their animal or completing their miscellaneous project, but they also get the chance to win prizes.

4-H’ers all around the United States make some of the greatest memories and greatest friends of their life and they get to learn new things and apply them to their everyday life.
